How to Interpret Historical narratives

A greater portion of Scripture from Genesis to Esther, the Gospels and the book of Acts are entirely historical narratives.

A historical narrative is a story that recounts real people, real events, and real places in history.

Unlike fiction, biblical narratives describe actual events that occurred in God’s interaction with humanity.

They are more than historical records. They proclaim theology through history.

The meaning of a narrative is found not simply in what happened, but in why the inspired author chose to tell the story the way he did.

Biblical narratives accomplish several important purposes.

1. They reveal God’s character. As we read the stories of Scripture, we learn that God is holy, faithful, merciful, just, patient, sovereign, and gracious.
2. They reveal the condition of humanity. The stories of Scripture repeatedly expose the consequences of sin, the weakness of human beings, and humanity’s continual need for God’s grace.
3. They advance God’s plan of redemption. Every narrative contributes in some way to the unfolding story that ultimately culminates in Jesus Christ.
4. Some narratives introduce God’s covenant promises.
5. Others preserve the family line through which the Messiah would come.
6. Some demonstrate humanity’s inability to save itself, thereby increasing our expectation for the coming Redeemer.
7. Finally, narratives teach timeless spiritual truths by showing how God works in real human lives.

Rather than presenting abstract ideas alone, God often teaches through the experiences of ordinary people.
