Implication – What Truths Naturally Flow From The Meaning?

What Truths flow from the Meaning?

After discovering the author’s intended meaning, we ask another important question:

What truths naturally flow from this meaning?

These truths are called implications.

An implication is a truth that arises logically and naturally from the meaning of the text, even though it may not be stated explicitly in the passage.

They unfold what is already contained within the author’s message.

One of the ways of ensuring that our implications are genuinely drawn from the text and not from our own imagination is to identify the Central Truth also called the Big Idea, of the passage.

The Central Truth summarizes the author’s intended message in one clear sentence.

For example

Philippians 4:10-13

  1. Author’s Meaning
Paul has learned to remain content and faithful in both abundance and lack through Christ’s strength.
  2. Central Truth
Christ enables believers to remain content and faithful regardless of circumstances.
  3. Implications
  • Contentment is not determined by possessions.
  • Christians can remain faithful in hardship.
  • Prosperity also requires dependence on Christ.
  • Christ’s strength is sufficient for changing circumstances.

All the implications above are drawn from the Central Truth.

Wrong implication
“Christ will enable me to accomplish anything I desire.”

Why?

Because Paul’s “all things” is defined by the surrounding verses.

He is talking about learning to live faithfully in different circumstances, not receiving unlimited ability to accomplish whatever he desires.

Today’s principle

A good Bible teacher asks: “Does this implication naturally arise from the author’s intended meaning, or am I introducing something that the text never says?”
